Getting started

From a fresh install to your first win chance in a few minutes. Mana Odds runs on Windows beside the Arena client for PC, and reads only the log Arena writes and Arena's card database.

1. What you need

  • Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, with Microsoft Edge WebView2, which Windows already includes.
  • The Arena client for PC, installed and updated, on the same computer.
  • For the overlay, Arena in a window or in borderless full screen: the overlay can't be drawn over exclusive full screen.

The full list, with how much processor time Mana Odds takes while you think, is under What you need on the home page.

2. Turn on Detailed Logs

In Arena, open Options, then Account, and tick Detailed Logs (Plugin Support). Restart Arena once.

Without it, Arena's log doesn't hold your drafts and your games, and Mana Odds has nothing to read. If Mana Odds stays empty during a draft, check this setting first.

3. Start Mana Odds after Arena

Install or update Arena first, then start Mana Odds. When it starts, Mana Odds reads Arena's card database to turn the numbers in the log into card names, and it reads it only then.

  • Arena updated while Mana Odds was open? Close Mana Odds and start it again, so that it knows the new cards.
  • Arena installed somewhere else? Mana Odds looks for it in Program Files and Program Files (x86), under Wizards of the Coast\MTGA, Steam\steamapps\common\MTGA and Epic Games\MagicTheGathering. If your Arena is elsewhere, give its folder, the one that holds MTGA_Data: make a shortcut to Mana Odds, open its Properties and add to the end of Target, for example, --arena-dir "D:\Games\MTGA".

Mana Odds finds Arena's window and places itself beside it. Its page is served on this computer only, at http://127.0.0.1:7980/: you can also open it in a browser, for example on a second monitor.

4. The panel and the overlay

The panel is a narrow window that follows Arena's. Choose how on its bar:

  • Dock: beside Arena's right edge, when the monitor has room for it.
  • Over: over Arena's right edge.
  • Free: where you put it. Dragging the panel by its handle makes it free too.

Drag the panel's edges to change its width, and set its opacity on the bar. It hides while Arena is minimized.

The overlay is a second window over Arena, with small widgets on Arena's left edge: your win chance, Library, Opponent, Zones and, in a draft, a grade on every card of the pack. Opponent and Zones come with Premium. Clicks outside the widgets go through to Arena. The overlay works with Arena in a window or in borderless full screen; with Arena in exclusive full screen it can't be drawn, so in Arena's graphics options choose a window or borderless full screen.

On the panel, under Overlay over Arena, you can turn the widgets off, set their opacity, let the panel hide itself during a game when it can't dock beside Arena, and choose how the widgets are drawn: if they don't show or clicks don't go through to Arena, choose transparent instead of colour key. That choice takes effect from the next start.

5. Hotkeys

Ctrl+Shift+HHide or show every widget
Ctrl+Shift+LOpen or close the Library widget
Ctrl+Shift+OOpen or close the Opponent widget (Premium)
Ctrl+Shift+EMove the widgets and fit the pack's grid; press it again to finish
Ctrl+Shift+PShow or hide the panel

They work while Arena or Mana Odds is the window in front, so they don't get in the way of other programs.

6. Streamer mode for OBS

In OBS, add a Browser source with the address http://127.0.0.1:7980/overlay?stream=1, and set its width and height to your canvas'. The background is transparent and every widget your plan includes is open. Mana Odds must be running on the same computer. The panel shows the same address under Overlay over Arena; if you started Mana Odds with --port, use that port.

7. Your licence

Without a licence Mana Odds runs in the Free plan. With Premium you receive a licence key, a line of text. To use it:

  1. Open Notepad and paste the key.
  2. Choose Save as. In the File name box type %LOCALAPPDATA%\mtg-assistant and press Enter to open that folder.
  3. Type "license.key" as the file name, with the quotes so that Notepad doesn't add .txt, choose the encoding UTF-8 and save. The full path is %LOCALAPPDATA%\mtg-assistant\license.key.
  4. Start Mana Odds again: About & settings shows who it is licensed to.

Save the key as UTF-8 (or ANSI), not as UTF-16: don't write it with PowerShell's >. Mana Odds reads the licence when it starts and checks it on your computer, without a connection.

8. What Mana Odds keeps on your PC

Everything is in your Windows user folder, %LOCALAPPDATA%\mtg-assistant:

  • window.json: the panel's and the overlay's settings.
  • history.jsonl: your games (when, the event, your deck, your opponent's name and colours, the result).
  • rank_history.jsonl: your rank as it changed.
  • license.key: your licence, if you saved one.
  • WebView2: the data of the built-in browser, including where you placed the widgets.
  • WebView2Loader.dll: a Microsoft file the window needs, written there by Mana Odds.

Deleting the folder resets Mana Odds, and removes your licence file too. Arena's log and card database are only read, never changed, and nothing is sent anywhere: see the privacy page.

9. If something doesn't work

The win chance is a dash, or the last game says "Not followed"

Mana Odds follows only FRA Limited: Premier Draft, Quick Draft and Sealed. A game with cards of other sets has no win chance and no review.

If the panel says it could not read the game's card names from Arena's card database, Mana Odds started before Arena was installed or updated, or didn't find Arena: close Mana Odds and start it again, or give --arena-dir (see Start Mana Odds after Arena).

"Live odds are off in this event"

On purpose: in qualifiers and other competitive events, and when a match's event isn't known, Mana Odds shows no live win chance. The review after the game, with Premium, stays. You can also turn the live win chance off yourself in About & settings. What each reason means: when the win chance is off.

Nothing shows during a draft

Check Detailed Logs and restart Arena once.

The widgets don't show over Arena

Arena is probably in exclusive full screen: choose a window or borderless full screen. If they still don't show, choose transparent drawing (see the panel and the overlay) and start Mana Odds again.
